Mock Accident

Every two years Jefferson Township conducts a mock accident in the parking lot of the High School. This is held just prior to the Prom to demonstrate to the Juniors and Seniors what can happen when someone drives under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The exercise involves two cars supplied by Sars Auto Salvage. Jefferson Township Police Department, Fire Company No. 1, Fire Company No. 2, Jefferson Rescue Squad and Milton First Aid Squad respond to the scene as if it is an actual mass casualty incident. One vehicle has passengers entrapped and the vehicle is cut open to extricate the patients. Below are pictures of the event and the students that volunteered to participate in the exercise.

Safety blankets and towels are placed underneath the student to ensure no real injuries happen in the mock accident.

Adding fake blood

Fake blood poured all around vehicle and ground (note bottle of blood by tire).

Driving Under Influence Driver

The driver of the DUI vehicle sets up some cans to spill out as he stumbles out of the vehicle when the exercise begins.

Vehicle #2

The occupants of vehicle 2 prepare for drill. Note "starring" of windshield where front seat passenger would have hit the window upon impact. Also note this is a two door vehicle.

DUI Driver stumbling about

After the impact the DUI driver has gotten out of his vehicle and is stumbling about.

Driver Confrontation

The driver of the second vehicle confronts the DUI driver.

DUI Driver wandering finding his date on hood of his car

The driver stumbles about after confrontation with driver of second vehicle. He realizes that his girlfriend has been ejected from her seat and finds her on the hood. He tries to wake her up.

Vehicle 2 front seat passenger unresponsive

The driver of the second vehicle returns to find his girlfriend unresponsive in the seat after hitting her head on the windshield.

DUI Vehicle passengers entrapped

The rear seat passengers of the partying vehicle can not open the doors and are injured, they can not get out by themselves.

DUI Driver Reality Sets In

The driver from the partying vehicle finally realizes what he has done.

Jefferson Township Police Arrive

JTPD vehicles arrive on the scene. Recognizing the severity of the accident they radio for Fire Company and First Aid Squad resources.

DUI Driver pleads for girlfriend to wake up

JTPD approaching with oxygen supplies. The driver of the DUI vehicle makes another attempt to wake up his girlfriend.

JTPD Access Second Vehicle

JTPD attend to the front seat passenger of the second vehicle.

DUI Driver Arrested

The driver of the partying vehicle is led to the police car for his protection and later arrest for DUI.

Vehicle 1's passenger pronounced

Because of the extent of injuries and lack of vital signs the front seat passenger that had been ejected has been pronounced dead on arrival. A tarp is placed over her after pronouncement.

Fire Company Sets Up for Extrication

Fire Company personnel prepare equipment to cut vehicle roof off. Rear seat passengers legs are pinned under seats as vehicle buckled from impact.

Vehicle #2 Front Seat Passenger

The passenger in the front seat of the second vehicle has been identified as unresponsive. The First Aid Squad stabilizes her cervical spine to minimize further damage and removes her from the vehicle. Note CPR is started and oxygen forced into her lungs using the Bag Valve Mask.

DUI Vehicle Extrication

The Fire Company begins cutting the pillars on the roof of the DUI vehicle. Note the rear seat passengers have had a protective blanket placed over them. Normally First Aid Squad personnel would be on the trunk of the vehicle and the rear window would have already been removed. They would be holding cervical spine immobilization. Because of the danger associated with being on the trunk while the car is being cut up the Squad did not perform this normal function. In real situations they would be in "turn out gear" and covered with the patients.

DOA Removed from Hood

The person dead on the hood of the partying vehicle is removed.

Roof Removed

With the roof off, the patients are attended to in the partying vehicle.

Second Passenger Boarded

The second rear seat passenger of the partying vehicle is placed on a long board and moved into an ambulance for transportaton.

Aftermath

The roof of the Saturn sits on the side of the road. With the patients removed JTPD collect evidence.

A Parent's Worst Nightmare

One of the parents is brought to the scene to identify the body of the girl that died in the crash.
